The position, Director of Television, has become one of the most sought-after jobs available in the network. Several people have held the title, including some of the network's most famous members.
The position was offically given to Andy O'Brien during the launch of the-then APFS Network, but the title was not used at the time. When he decided to leave to concerntrate on his independent company, Corazon, Rob Williams took over. He was involved in the organisation of the first franchise round, at one of the network's busiest times.
After deciding to leave at the next round of bidding, the first ever vote to the decide the new DofTV was started. The winner was Rhys O'Sullivan. His reputation was low after unsuccessful attempts at franchises and controvesy surrounding apfs2. During his reign, many big names in the network, such as the Dean Television Consortium, left due to other commitments. O'Sullivan resigned in September 2005 due to the rebrand of the network to 6-Net, much to the shock of other members and threats of a rival network were running through the forum. Andy returned as Executive Director soon after, but the DofTV title was retired.
After the period of Phil England, O'Sullivan was welcomed back to his post by the current chairman, Orry Verducci, becoming the first two-time DofTV. He oversaw the re-building of the torn Network, including the creation of the Sixth Channel Authority and the re-introduction of digital channels. He brought the SixSport channel from his own company, Phoenix Television, into Network ownership in the form of the SSN (Six Sport Network) which is now pseudo-regionalised, along with the first provisions and schedules for the Six HD channel, however both of which have now been franchised as of 2009.
O'Sullivan decided to leave his position, and then temporarily left the Network in November 2007, handing over the Director of Television position to Mark Jones of Emoa Television. Jones also made his mark on the Network, including the re-introduction of Station Challenges throughout 2008, along with deeper network schedules, the creation of the Network's overnight service, and suggesting a number of changes to annual franchising, some of which were implemented in the 2009 round.
In January 2010, it was announced that a new Director of Television would be appointed after the 2010 franchise round. However this deadline was postponed until the summer, and official nominations began on 10 June. There was only a single nomination, from the former DofTV Rhys O'Sullivan. O'Sullivan underwent a ratification vote and was approved as Director of Television on 1 July 2010. Jones, who also opened the Director of Digital nominations at the same time as the DofTV, stated he would continue to operate that ballot as part of his "residuary functions". A new DofD is expected to be elected by 19 July.
