Six HD is a high definition digital variant of the Network Six channel, broadcasting all available HD programming on the network schedule. Launched in 2007, it was operated centrally by the Network until March 2009, when the service became franchised. It is operated by TotalAccess though the company has chosen not to identify itself on-air. Six HD is not regionalised due to capacity restraints, however variations for the Nations could be included as part of the franchise remit in future.
Six HD currently broadcasts on Sky Digital, Freesat, and Virgin Media cable.
2007-2009 Era
In mid-2007, discussion began about a possible HD variant of Network Six. This move was supported by the network board at the time, with the first provisional schedule created later in the year.
From launch until March 2009, Six HD ran a loop of a handful of HD programming and promotions, simulcasting HD fare from the Network Schedule when available.
2009 Restructuring
Six HD was put up for franchising during the March 2009 franchise round. TotalAccess was the sole applicant and was thus awarded the franchise.
The company intends to make Six HD an entertainment destination for those with access to HD. Round-the-clock HD programming is promised, with theme nights, movie showings, and select sporting events enjoying time on the schedule. Simulcasting of programmes on the main channel will no longer occur; instead, up to three hours of the previous night's Network primetime schedule will air in the morning hours, under the heading of Primetime in the Daytime.
2010 & 2011 franchise rounds
In both 2010 and 2011, TotalAccess re-applied for Six HD, unchallenged.
